We are fortunate to continue our collaboration with the Moscow branch of the Hungarian Cultural Centre. It began in 2022 with a partner competition, which evolved into an exhibition the following year. Now, with the support of the Liszt Institute and PROGRAFIKA art space, we are pleased to host a lecture by Hungarian designer László Nagy.
It all began with a competition launched in November 2022, where students were invited to create graphic concepts for merchandise representing ten Hungarian cities. The organizers chose to keep the Russian spelling of the city names in the entries, as they sound unique to Russian speakers and look visually complex. Participants designed symbols for the cities and developed lettering compositions using Cyrillic, with the option to apply them to various items like t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and more.
The selected cities were:
HÓDMEZŐVÁSÁRHELY
SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR
ZALAEGERSZEG
NYÍREGYHÁZA
MOSONMAGYARÓVÁR
TÖRÖKBÁLINT
KISKUNFÉLEGYHÁZA
BALATONMÁRIAFÜRDŐ
SÁTORALJAÚJHELY
PARÁDSASVÁR
In February 2023, HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL hosted an exhibition as part of a competition and collaboration with the Liszt Institute.
Mitya Kharshak, Head of the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL in St. Petersburg, shared: “Cultural projects with a European focus have become quite rare in our region, making our small yet charming project with the Hungarian Cultural Centre — Liszt Institute even more valuable. Sándor Kozlov, the director of the Liszt Institute and my friend, chose names of ten Hungarian cities that sound quite exotic to Russian ears. Together with the students, we researched each city to uncover its unique characteristics or the meaning of its name. For instance, Sátoraljaújhely translates to ‘New City Under the Tent,’ which inspired the winning poster by Maria Filatova. Another city, Hódmezővásárhely, means ‘Market on the Beaver Field.’ These insights led to typographic posters and merchandise designs created by the competition participants.”
On September 9, 2024, HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL, in collaboration with the Liszt Institute and PROGRAFIKA art space, will present a lecture by Hungarian designer László Nagy.
László Nagy, an expert in graphic design, illustration, and poster art, is also an associate professor and head of the bachelor's program in Graphic Design at MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design). His research interests include contemporary illustration, screen printing, and alternative poster culture.
The lecture, titled “Screen Printed Alternative Gig and Movie Posters,” will be held in Saint Petersburg on September 9 at PROGRAFIKA, located at 31/2 Staro-Petergofsky Prospekt, starting at 19:30.
В этом учебном сезоне к команде преподавателей направления «Коммуникационный дизайн и брендинг» в Школе дизайна в Ереване присоединилась дизайнер Айарпи Акопян.
