"This program is designed for those who want to pursue a career in design and are also passionate about art and contemporary culture in all its diverse forms. Visual communication and the branding of cultural institutions often serve as testing grounds for bold, unconventional, and even provocative design ideas, providing a space for genuine creative freedom. The vibrant cultural landscape of Saint Petersburg allows us to integrate real-world projects from our clients and partners—including leading museums, theaters, festivals, and art galleries—directly into the curriculum," says Ksenia Malich, historian, PhD in Art History, and lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School in Saint Petersburg.
The program is designed for graduates holding a bachelor's degree in design, visual arts, or a closely related field. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on the dynamic roles that cultural institutions play at the intersection of academia, public education, media, entertainment, and technology. Rather than viewing museums and galleries as static spaces, the program recognizes their evolving importance in contemporary society and prepares students to engage with these complexities.
Students will be equipped to navigate a wide array of professional environments—ranging from traditional museums to immersive and digital venues—by addressing the unique visual communication and branding challenges found within each context. The location in Saint Petersburg, widely regarded as the cultural capital of Russia, provides unparalleled access to historic institutions such as the Hermitage Museum, the Russian Museum, and the Manege. This proximity to leading cultural landmarks offers students rare opportunities for hands-on experience and direct engagement with the arts sector.
Under the guidance of renowned Russian designers, students will work on authentic projects and develop professional portfolios that showcase their creativity and leadership potential. The program also features regular meetings with curators, conservators, museum directors, gallery managers, media professionals, independent experts, and international colleagues, ensuring that students are exposed to diverse perspectives and the latest industry practices.

The first year immerses students in the world of branding for cultural institutions, including theaters, museums, and festivals. Through practical assignments, students design posters, programs, and flyers; create custom typefaces; and produce zines—unique, small-edition publications that showcase their individual perspectives. They also conceptualize and develop comprehensive exhibition designs, gaining hands-on experience with the visual identity and communication challenges faced by cultural organizations.
Parallel to these creative projects, the "Design Technologies" classes introduce students to essential digital skills such as video editing and post-production, 3D modeling, typography, and the intricacies of custom font creation. Complementing the studio work, foundational courses in the history and theory of art and design provide critical context, encouraging students to situate their practice within broader cultural and historical frameworks.
In the second year, the curriculum shifts toward research-driven design and digital innovation. Students conduct in-depth visual research and apply their findings to the development of websites and mobile applications for selected cultural institutions. These projects challenge students to think strategically about user experience, accessibility, and the evolving digital landscape.
The capstone of the year is the final project, in which students step into the dual roles of art director and designer. They synthesize everything they have learned—creative, technical, and professional—by conceptualizing and producing an exhibition or event. This culminating experience not only demonstrates students’ design leadership but also serves as a cornerstone of their professional portfolios, which they continuously build throughout the program by working on multiple complex projects and even exploring opportunities in teaching or mentorship.
The third year focuses on deepening students’ theoretical and critical understanding of art and design. The "History and Theory of Art/Design" course offers an eclectic mix of specialized modules, covering areas such as film, photography, music, comics, video games, animation, fashion, curatorial practices, and media art. Each semester, students select two electives, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals.
This advanced coursework dives deeply into contemporary theories and practices, guided by subject specialists and industry experts. Students are exposed to cutting-edge debates and innovative methods within their chosen cultural domains, preparing them for thoughtful, informed engagement in the professional world.
