"This program is for those who, on one hand, want to engage in design and, on the other, are passionate about art and contemporary culture in all its diverse forms. Visual communications and the branding of cultural institutions often become a testing ground for bold, unconventional, and even provocative design ideas — a space for creative freedom. Saint Petersburg's vibrant cultural scene allows us to incorporate real projects from our clients and partners, including leading museums, theaters, festivals, and art galleries, into the curriculum," says Ksenia Malich, historian, PhD in Art History, and lecturer at the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL in Saint Petersburg.
The program is intended for graduates with a bachelor's degree in design, visual arts, or a similar field. This curriculum emphasizes cultural institutions' dynamic roles at the intersection of academia, public education, media, entertainment, and technology.
It prepares students for a wide range of environments, from traditional museums to immersive and digital venues, by addressing visual communication and branding challenges. The location in Saint Petersburg, the so-called cultural capital of Russia, with historic institutions such as the Hermitage Museum, Russian Museum, and Manege, provides unequaled access to cultural landmarks.
Students will work on genuine projects and create professional portfolios displaying their creativity and leadership potential under the guidance of renowned Russian designers. The program includes meetings with curators, conservators, museum directors, gallery managers, media representatives, independent experts, and international colleagues.
During the first year of study, students work on branding projects for cultural institutions such as theaters, museums, or festivals. They create posters, programs, and flyers; design custom typefaces; and make zines—authorial, small-edition publications. Students also develop comprehensive exhibition designs.
In 'Design Technologies' classes, students learn video editing and post-production, 3D modeling, typography, and custom font creation. Throughout the program, students also study the history and theory of art and design.
Students do visual research and develop websites and mobile applications for a chosen cultural institution. For the final project, graduates act as both art directors and designers by combining all of their creative and professional learning in the form of an exhibition or event concept and production.
This curriculum allows students to enrich their professional portfolio, learn how to work on multiple projects at once, and even find teaching opportunities.
The "History and Theory of Art/Design" course offers a wide range of specialized courses on film, photography, music, comics, video games, animation, fashion, curatorial practices, and media art. Each semester, students choose two modules from a selection of electives to personalize the curriculum to their professional interests. The course delves deeply into certain cultural domains, introducing students to current theories and practices as given by subject specialists.
Admission to the master's program is determined through a competitive selection procedure that involves an interview and a portfolio assessment. Exams are conducted online.
During the interview, applicants have the opportunity to fully demonstrate their level of motivation and interest in studying design, as well as to answer questions from the admissions committee about their personal preferences in art and design.
Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of their design projects, as well as any other projects they have been involved in. The portfolio must include visual materials with comprehensive descriptions and possible links to online design portfolios.
Diplomas and certificates from design contests can also be provided. There are no limitations on the amount of works that can be submitted.
Portfolios are uploaded to a digital platform of the HSE Art and Design School.
