The HSE Online Campus celebrates its first bachelor’s graduates

Over 100 graduates received their higher education diplomas after completing programs in Design and Computer Science & Data Analysis. In total, 117 students took part in the programs, representing various regions of Russia — including the Moscow, Leningrad, Tula, and Novosibirsk regions, Perm Krai, and the Republic of Bashkortostan — as well as four other countries: Kazakhstan, Georgia, Portugal, and the United States.

The Design program brought together 86 students, 96% of whom successfully completed their studies, with 23% graduating with honors. The Information Technology program had a graduation rate of 55% from the original group. The average final GPA for the two programs was 7.29 and 7.49, respectively.

In 2020, HSE University launched Russia’s first English-taught online master’s program, and by 2021, we had opened admissions to two online bachelor’s programs. Since then, the number of available programs has grown to six, and the number of first-year students has increased from 117 to 408 by 2024.

Director of Online Education at HSE University

"The graduation of our first online bachelor’s class marks a major milestone in online higher education,” continues Yulia Remezova, “confirming that distance learning can provide students with valuable career opportunities and uphold the same high academic standards as traditional, campus-based programs.”

We firmly believe that the new philosophy of education is about making learning flexible, personalized, and comfortable, while ensuring that the knowledge gained is relevant and in demand. The online format helps us uphold this vision by giving students across regions—and with different schedules—access to expert communities and the opportunity to learn from the best, without compromising other aspects of their lives.”

The first graduating class of CSDA is a special milestone for the students, the programs, and the online education format as a whole. Our graduates have become true pioneers and helped improve the program for future classes: thanks to their feedback, we have enhanced our courses and processes.

Academic Director of the online bachelor’s program in Computer Science and Data Analysis

"The learning process at the Faculty of Computer Science emphasizes practical immersion, so many of our current graduates began successful careers even before graduation," explains said Valentin Promyslov"We are proud that our students have become highly sought-after specialists. This first graduating class has demonstrated that we succeeded in providing a high-quality, fundamental education in one of the most promising fields. The students showed perseverance, responsibility, and a readiness to support each other and those who follow in their footsteps. We thank every graduate for being with us and for opening this path for future students.”

Graduates are already building careers at well-known companies and government organizations, including Sber, VTB, Yandex, Voyah, the Federal Tax Service, the Moscow Department of Transport, RBC, and others. Many apply their skills and knowledge in private startups and even launch their own projects.

I enrolled in the CSDA program without any prior programming experience. At first, it was challenging — I had to start from scratch and tackle serious algorithmic problems close to the level of programming competitions. Today, I work as an ML engineer in the R&D geoanalytics team at VTB.

Timur Lidzhiyev

Graduate of the online bachelor’s program in Computer Science and Data Analysis

One of the highlights of my studies was the opportunity to present my own project under the supervision of Alexander Alexandrovich Tarakanov at the 2025 EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) International Conference in France," says Timur Lidzhiyev. "The project focused on Physics Informed Neural Networks — a field I plan to continue exploring in my future research.

I’m grateful for the university’s extensive company partnerships that actively assist students in their professional development. For example, my first interview was with Yandex, and I only dared to take it because the Faculty of Computer Science offered me the chance to practice it in a mock format.”

The program’s fully online format allows every student to feel free. There’s no need to relocate to a city or even leave home to receive a quality education. I studied in a strong animation class, with students from different cities and even countries. Everyone was equal in the eyes of the professors, and the mentors provided personalized support to each student, helping with challenges and offering encouragement.

Darina Spigina

Graduate of the online bachelor’s program in Design, specializing in Animation

"My student life was very active: I became a class representative, helped first-year students, went on expeditions, project trips, joined construction teams, participated in an exchange program in Moscow," says Darina Spigina"and chose courses within my individual study plan based on what I enjoyed. Being online never limited me.

When I entered the bachelor’s program, I had no formal art education, but I’m graduating with a portfolio of diverse work and friends who have become like family over these four years. Studying online, each student faces many crossroads in their path, and choosing the next step is an individual decision.”

Ivan Bondarenko, curator of the Animation and Illustration track in the online bachelor’s Design program, emphasizes that the online learning process is just as effective as in a traditional classroom setting. The material and its delivery are absorbed in the same way, but with the added advantage of real-time feedback and the ability to address mistakes as students work on their projects — a level of immediacy that helps avoid wasted effort.

Nina Bisyarina, a lecturer in the same program, highlights that the biggest benefit of the online format is providing access to quality education for students who would find relocating to HSE campuses very challenging. Moreover, it familiarizes future professionals with a common way of working in animation production — remote collaboration.

The application campaign for the bachelor’s programs started on June 20 and will run until August 15. Prospective students from Russia and other countries can apply to HSE University’s online bachelor’s programs:

  • Design
  • Computer Science and Data Analysis
  • Economic Analysis
  • Global Digital Communications
  • Business Management
  • Software Systems and Process Automation

All programs are fully online and designed according to HSE University’s educational standards, ensuring high-quality and effective learning despite the distance between students and academic staff. Graduates receive a state-recognized diploma equivalent to that of full-time, on-campus programs at one of the country’s leading universities.
