International conference THEORIES AND PRACTICES OF ART AND DESIGN: SOCIOCULTURAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS

HSE Art and Design School and HSE Doctoral School in Arts & Design invite to take part in the international conference that will take place at the HSE CREATIVE HUB on 9-10 April.

This year the conference will be devoted to the future of art and art research in the 21st century. It will also address the role and function of art and design in modern society. The key topics of the conference include: socio-economic contexts of art and design in the 20th and 21st centuries; the institutionalization of art and design and corresponding educational strategies; museum practices; various facets of artist-curator-viewer-researcher relationship; and most recent research in cultural studies (including media studies, game studies, cinema studies, etc.).

The working languages of the conference are Russian and English.

  • The application must contain:

  • keywords reflecting the problematic of your paper and connected to the main topics of the conference,

Contemporary art and design: traversing the boundaries

The boundaries of art in postmodern world. The concept ‘boundaries in art’, its ontological meaning and various connotations. Interdisciplinary strategies in contemporary art studies: theoretical reflections. The nature of boundaries in modern art practice. The shift of boundaries in the new art forms and genres. Immersive art as new vision of the world. Contemporary painting online. Projects ‘in-between’ contemporary art and design: interdisciplinary connections.

Topical issues of contemporary art theory

The latest theoretical discourses and practices of contemporary art and culture. The most significant texts and the working out of new concepts. The philosophy of contemporary art. Contemporary art theory and feminism/cyberfeminism. Gender representations in art. Contemporary art as postconceptualism and metanarrative. Decolonial turn and contemporary art. The art of participation in new aesthetic practices.

Education in art and design

Contemporary condition and perspectives of development, new patterns and strategies. The specific features of art and design education in Russia and abroad. New design thinking and modern educational technologies (“PhD by Practice”). The analysis of project-oriented approaches to art research (practice as research). Innovative educational programmes in art and design. The development of the project design thinking and practical skills during design teaching, methods of project design, pre-project and project design research. Fashion history and theory

Fashion and sociocultural contexts. History of the body and corporeality, boundaries of the body, the "Fashionable pose". Fashion and media. Fashion and the multisensory turn.

Sound art and sound design

Sound engineering, audio branding, sound in contemporary art, including complex media installations, and in media communications.

Illustration and comics

Multimedia and transmedia storytelling in the context of book illustration. Multimodal books and reader narrative, the anthropology of reading: the reader of visual narrative. Visual literacy: how to achieve. The art of illustration ‘inside’ the book. The book as an object and a subject of art. The resurgence of samizdat and limited editions. The impact of technologies on the illustrated book: problems and solutions. AR and VR in Illustration and comics.

Media art

Contemporary illustration, animation, and video art. Digital art in virtual and mixed reality (from human-computer interfaces design to social context). Internet art in post-Internet situation.

Game studies and video game development theory

Philosophy, research, history, design, and criticism of video games. The distinctive development approaches of individual game designers and game studios. Defining boundaries and conceptualizing new game genres, their lineage and continuity. Schools of video game development. Frameworks and patterns in game design.

Art and design economy and sociology

Social and economic problems in art and design. The role of art market, its present condition and future perspectives. Art and design as ‘mass culture’ tool. Design and creative activity of manufacturers in contemporary machine production.

Art and urban studies: urban design

Area branding and urban space design. Experimental urban design. The role of art and design in urban development. Art and design objects in urban environment. Light design in urban space. ‘Participatory culture’ in the context of participatory art practice in megapolis and regional towns.

Art glass, ceramics and textiles: contexts of the past, present and future

Problems of modern art glass, ceramics and textiles: general tendencies of development, traditions and modernity, new world - new technologies, unique pieces and objects of author's design. History; pieces attribution and dating. Questions concerning origin, museumfication, preservation and collections formation. Research in restoration and conservation of glass, ceramic and textile items.

Creative industries as a driver of sustainable development: strategies, practices, transformations

Sustainability turn in art and design. Sustainability as a creative approach. The new ethics of creative production. Sustainable actualization of natural and cultural heritage. Inter-institutional and interdisciplinary dialogue in the context of sustainable development.

The students’ cases festival

The demonstration of art projects prepared by HSE Art and Design School students specialising in various disciplines: communication design, animation and illustration, environmental design, interior design, design and IT, design and contemporary art, game design and VR, theatre and cinema design, media and design, design and advertising, product and industrial design.
