Hungarian Design Day at HSE University in St Petersburg

On October 2, HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL – St Petersburg will host the Hungarian Design Day. Graphic artist István Orosz will talk about his work and the history of Hungarian graphic design, while researcher and curator Márton Orosz will present his documentary film. The day will conclude with the opening of an exhibition featuring the results of a joint competition organised by HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL and Budapest Metropolitan University. The exhibition will be available until the end of October.

Hungarian Design Day is organised in collaboration with the Budapest Metropolitan University and the Hungarian Cultural Centre. The event will bring together two representatives of the contemporary Hungarian art scene.

Orosz is known for his work in optical art, including visual illusions, double-meaning images, impossible figures and anamorphoses. He also works in design, creating posters for theatre productions, films and exhibitions.

One of Márton Orosz’s research interests is György Kepes (1906–2001), a Hungarian visionary and one of the key figures in media art. Kepes’s research into light and his experiments at the intersection of art, science and technology were ahead of their time.

György Kepes: Connecting Art and Science

Márton Orosz’s documentary offers a comprehensive portrait of György Kepes — a visionary thinker and erudit, artist, photographer, designer, researcher and cultural figure. Kepes created an innovative platform that brought artists and scientists together to explore new ways of perception.

He worked with prominent Bauhaus figures in Europe and played a major role in shaping the cultural landscape of post-war America. The screening of the film marks the 120th anniversary of Kepes’s birth.

Russian and Hungarian Cinema Through Alternative Posters

Also on October 2, the Rope Workshop building will hold an exhibition of works by students who took part in the FilmART Connect. Shared Frames competition.

Communication designers and illustrators from Budapest Metropolitan University and HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL reimagined Russian and Hungarian cinema through alternative film posters.

The participants explored films selected by the curators and translated their stories into visual concepts that combine their own perspectives with the traditions of film poster design in the two countries — from the conceptual minimalism and typographic experimentation of the Soviet school to the surrealist and painterly language of Hungarian poster design.

Hungarian Design Day will take place on October 2, 2026, at HSE School of Design — St Petersburg, at the Rope Workshop (6, Building 1, 25th Line of Vasilyevsky Island, Room 314). The event starts at 18:00.
