HSE builds academic dialogue with China Academy of Art (CAA)

On September 14, 2025,  a delegation from HSE University’s Faculty of Creative Industries met with representatives of the China Academy of Art (CAA) and the CAA Design Museum at the Academy’s Hangzhou campus. This was the first in‑person meeting following CAA professors Shao Wenhuan, Head of the Department of Photography, and Liu Yang, Deputy Head of the Department, serving as jury members for the HSE Creative Open / Photo Project. The visit marked an important step in advancing academic dialogue between the universities.

Natalia Logutova — deputy director of the Institute for Creative Industries Developement represented the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL. During the visit, HSE representatives toured the campus, museum facilities, and current exhibitions. Highlights included Moving Images, a contemporary lens on China using cutting‑edge multimedia, and Spirit of China: 60 Years of Kan Tai‑Keung, a retrospective dedicated to a key figure in Chinese graphic design.

The tour was led by Feng Yuchun, CAA lecturer and Head of the International Department at the Design Museum, who also outlined plans for upcoming exhibitions and educational projects.

Founded in 1928, the China Academy of Art is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious institutions in the fine arts. Today, it blends deep traditions with contemporary practice, encompassing dedicated schools of design, architecture, painting, and calligraphy, as well as an International College that welcomes students from around the world. Among its founders and faculty are leading artists and educators who championed the synthesis of China’s artistic heritage with innovative Western approaches.

The visit underscored HSE and CAA’s shared interest in expanding cooperation in design, architecture, and museum practices—opening new opportunities for students and faculty on both sides.
